The Minister. The Minister? Mrs Kathleen Weil Mrs Weil : Yes, thank you, Mr President. Right then , I have the pleasure of putting forward Bill No.82, a bill which proclaims a day of commemoration of the crimes against humanity committed in Cambodia between 1975-79. And if you would allow me, Mr President, to point out that we have with us Mrs Nolsina Yim, president of the Centre Khemara and Mr Savary Chhem-Kieth, cofounder of the Centre Khemara. Thank you for being present. So, Mr President, the objective of this Bill is to proclaim the 19th of September a day of commemoration of the crimes against humanity committed in Cambodia between 1975-79. Motion acknowledging crimes against humanity
committed in Cambodia between 1975 and 1979

16th september, 2015 Mrs Weil, Minister of Immigration, Diversity and Inclusion, together with Mrs Poirier (Hochelaga-Maisonneuve), Mr Charette (Deux-Montagnes), Mr Khadir (Mercier) et Mrs Roy (Arthabaska), propose : THAT the National Assembly acknowledges crimes against humanity committed in THAT the National Assembly reaffirms its engagement with the values of tolerance and respect of human rights by condemning these crimes perpetrated by a regime which was responsible for the deaths of more that 1.7 million people and which caused the forced THAT the National Assembly is reminded that more than 10 000 Cambodians came to Quebec as refugees in the decade which followed these crimes and that a Cambodian community composed of approximately 15 000 people currently resides in Quebec and THAT the National Assembly commemorates these tragic events so that the horror which the victims experienced will never be forgotten, nor repeated, and that the Assembly expresses their desire that the 19th of September becomes a day of commemoration of Finally, that the Assembly observes a minute of silence in homage to the victims. |

Montreal, March 2015 – Objets, photos, creative works, more than a hundred hours of oral and visual testimony...The Centre Khemara, the centre for Khmer History and Civilisation, has been putting together this collection of Cambodian memory for the last four years. In addition, as a centre of intercultural exchange, the Centre Khemara holds workshops and events which explore Cambodia’s history and culture. 16th September 2015 Du consentement de l’Assemblée pour déroger à l’article 185 du Règlement, Mrs Weil, Minister of Immigration, Diversity and Inclusion, together with Mrs Poirier (Hochelaga-Maisonneuve), Mr Charette (Deux-Montagnes), Mr Khadir (Mercier) et Mrs Roy (Arthabaska), propose : THAT the National Assembly reaffirms its engagement with the values of tolerance and respect of human rights by condemning these crimes perpetrated by a regime which was responsible for the deaths of more that 1.7 million people and which caused the forcedexile of millions of families from Cambodia. THAT the National Assembly is reminded that more than 10 000 Cambodians came to Quebec as refugees in the decade which followed these crimes and that a Cambodian community composed of approximately 15 000 people currently resides in Quebec and fully participates in Quebec society; THAT the National Assembly commemorates these tragic events so that the horror which the victims experienced will never be forgotten, nor repeated, and that the Assembly expresses their desire that the 19th of September becomes a day of commemoration ofthe crimes against humanity committed in Cambodia between 1975-79; Finally, that the Assembly observes a minute of silence in homage to the victims. With the permission of the Assembly, a debate follows. The debate finishes, the motion is adopted At the request of Mr Gendron, third vice-president, the Assembly observes a minute of silence. On the 12th March 2015, at the Cinémathèque québécoise, there was a press conference for the Centre Khemara. It announced celebrations in 2015, which revolve around the 35 year anniversary of the arrival of more than 2 million Cambodian refugees in Canada, victims of the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime. |
